Original Digital Woodcut Prints

In making these digital woodcuts, I first compose a specially prepared collage of my own digital photographs.  Once satisfied with the composition of these photos, it is introduced to the woodcut imaging software.

It is within this software that the image may take any form chosen. It is possible to generate coarse or refined woodcut lines or shapes to define image forms. It is, in truth, a digital carving! As with any other media, it depends upon the skill and invention of the artist.

The next step is the choosing of the color palette. This can be as broad or as limited as chosen.

Texture, transparent colors, layering etc. can also be implemented. I can work with the actual colors within the photo or derive any palette of my choosing. Although this new media can be time consuming it is spontaneous as well.

When satisfied with the piece as viewed on screen, the Giclée printing process can begin. All of the prints are made in the studio on my own wide-format printer where I have complete control over the color proofing and final results. In this way, all digital woodcuts are original works of art from start to finish. This new printing process yields extremely high definition prints, which were not previously possible using traditional mediums.

I have used the traditional process of woodcut printing in the past but was never entirely satisfied with its physical limitations and always yearned for the woodcut medium to have that same immediacy that is inherent in the acrylic paintings that I have made over the past thirty-six years. The new digital media has made what was formerly impossible possible.

Digital Woodcuts take the finished physical from of a high resolution Giclée Print and are not a "copy" or "reproduction" of an original painting or drawing etc.  Each Digital Woodcut is considered an "original print" similar to Fine Art traditional printmaking.

Currently, I am making Original Digital Woodcut Prints up to 44 inches in height and at almost any length using Fine Art Watercolor Papers and Canvas.

Original Digigraph Prints

The Original Digigraph Prints are a combination of numerous digital media. I do not use any “apps” to make these works . These are a result of techniques I have been developing over the past 15 years.

The Digigraph technique begins with making a specially prepared collage of my own digital photographs.  Once satisfied with the composition of these photos, the image and color is digitally transformed. The contours shadows and texture are also changed to suit the overall composition; making some images come forward and others recede. Transparent colors and layers are added to create visual luminosity and depth. Lastly, hand-directed digital painting is added.

There is currently no distinct name for digitally based Fine Art or Art made through the use of digital tools and software on a computer. The name Digigraphy or "Digigraphie" is one term referenced more frequently in Europe to define high quality digitally based fine art prints created with an Epson printer and Giclée Printmaking.

My Digigraphs take the finished physical from of a high resolution Giclée Print and are not a "copy" or "reproduction" of an original painting or drawing etc. Each Digigraph is considered an "original print" similar to Fine Art traditional printmaking.

Currently, I am making Original Digigraph Prints up to 44 inches in height and at almost any length using Fine Art Watercolor Papers and Canvas.

Prints on Fine Art Paper

A Fine Art Paper Giclée print is a museum quality digital print produced on a smooth or textured fine art paper. We select smooth or textured paper depending upon how it suits a particular image. Our selection of fine art papers are 100 percent cotton mould-made with a special coating for pigmented inks. These papers are also acid, lignin and chlorine free.

Fine Art Paper Prints must be framed and displayed under glass or Plexiglas. We recommend an acid-free mat over the print to prevent the print from coming in direct contact with the glass or Plexiglas.

Prints on Canvas

A Canvas Giclée print is a museum quality digital replica of the original painting - printed on real canvas. Our canvas selection is made from a durable acid free blend of 65% Polyester and 35% Cotton. This unique heavyweight, quality canvas utilizes a tight weave and displays a subtle texture for incredible color. If you wish to have a print with the luminosity of the paintings, we recommend the canvas prints.

Canvas prints do not need to be placed under glass. These prints have a protective UV coating. This advanced acrylic polymer coating protects the print from moisture, light, humidity and atmospheric contaminants.

The prints will be stretched on standard stretcher bars (3/4" inches deep) with gallery wrap, image wrapped edges (white edge if specified)  The print would then be ready to hang no framing necessary.

"Image wrap" means that the image wraps around the edges of the stretcher so it will not need a frame. The original picture is not cropped or compromised in any way.  The wrap is simply extra picture or a mirrored edge (derived from the original painting) that is added on to seamlessly wrap around the sides.

Heavy Duty Stretcher Bars are also an option they are 1 and 1/2" inches deep.  Please contact Morton Arts for more information.

Other framing specifications are welcome. However, keep in mind that certain mat colors or frame tones may not compliment the artwork. Our goal is to find a happy medium between our artistic choice and your personal preference. Please call for more details or a price estimate.

Ready- Made Framing

We will select a ready-made frame for your print, provided that one is available and suitable to the size and colors of the image. Ready-made frame options are limited and their proportions are not always appropriate. When a ready-made frame is requested, we will custom print the image to fit the size of the frame. This can result in a slightly larger or smaller print size. The print is mounted on a white acid-free board and placed in the frame with custom mat. The framed print will be ready to hang when it arrives.
